Development firm fined for asbestos related offences - 26th May 2010
A company from Essex has been hit with a five-figure fine after potentially exposing its workers and members of the public to
asbestos containing materials.
Savoir Developments failed to undertake a suitable risk assessment to determine the presence of asbestos during work at a property in Poole in March 2008.
The Colchester-based firm pleaded guilty to breaching Regulations 5 and 16 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 as was fined £7,500 for each offence.
In addition, it was ordered to pay costs of £10,461 after the case was brought to the attention of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) by neighbours concerned about dust from the work.
"This sentence sends a clear message that employers must check for the presence of asbestos and take measures to ensure its safe handling and removal and to avoid its spread," said HSE inspector Kathy Gostick.
Earlier this month, the HSE joined forces with independent retail trade body BHF-BSSA Group in order to develop a new asbestos factsheet for company bosses.
